This concise pocket-sized guide presents the classic Bates approach to physical examination and history taking in a quick-reference outline format. It contains all the critical information needed to obtain a clinically meaningful health history and conduct a thorough physcial assessment. Fully revised and updated to reflect currennt health care literature, the Seventh Edition will help health professionals elicit relevant facts from the patient’s history, review examination procedures, highlight common findings, learn special assessment techniques, and sharpen interpretive skills.
The book features a vibrant full-color art program and an easy-to-follow two-column format with step-by-step examination techniques on the left and abnormalities with differential diagnoses on the right.
“With this edition, the authors continue the excellence that the Bates’ books have enjoyed. The authors are leading educators in their fields.”
“This pocket version, based on the larger Bates’ Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, 11th edition, by the same authors (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2013) is excellent, capturing the details in a most efficient manner in a format that is easy to refer to. The text is a perfect mix of words in bulleted format, pictures, and tables.”
“This is a great, handy, well-sized book.”

My professors recommended this pocket guide as an accompaniment to the full Bates textbook. As someone who realistically is not going to read textbooks word for word (every semester I try but it never happens), I am glad to have this quick reference copy that simplifies and relates assessment findings concisely. It fits well within my lab coat pocket, my clinical bag, my purse, and I bring it with me to even study on the trolley or before exams.
I’m glad I purchased this, though it was expensive and not required for my Family Nurse Practitioner classes.
I am a NP student. I have started to carry this with me, and make notes of my own in it. I highly recommend as an additional to the Bates physical exam book. My only complaint is that I wish the chapters had different colored edges to help with combing through it. I have just put my own page tabs on to help find info quickly. The pictures in it are great. Easy to use charts. Very handy.
very efficient tool for a medical student on the wards and also for a resident good color and diagrams illustration
Excellent book, very helpful. Easy to find out things, how to prescribe, right dosage depends on the age and weight.
Makes learning physical exam so much easier- i decided on the pocket version rather than the full as I can imagine pulling this out in front of patients if I needed to clarify a point and it fits in my lab coat pocket very well.
Great reference for the most common exam techniques. Also good for how to document findings. Simply set up and easy to locate what you are looking for.
