With this new seventh edition of CLASSICS OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, authors Jay M. Shafritz and Albert C. Hyde aim to introduce students to the principles of public administration via the most significant scholarly writings on the topic. Straightforward and informative, this text begins its discussion with Woodrow Wilson and continues to today’s political scientists. A new Section V, “Public Administration in a New Century,” is dedicated to writing and thinking from the 21st century. This edition includes six new readings and addresses the key fields of public administration: bureaucracy, organization theory, human resources management, the budgetary process, public policy, implementation, evaluation, intergovernmental relations, and public service ethics.
“For as long as I can remember, this book has been a staple.”– Lawson Veasey, Jacksonville State University

I purchased this textbook because it was a requirement for a class in my MPA program, and am happy to say it is a very informative book. It is full of essays from the foremost minds in the field of public administration and is set up in an easy to follow manner. It is broken out in chronological order based on different advancements in the field of public administration. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about public administration. As a professional working in the field, a lot of what I am reading is extremely applicable and can be implemented immediately. I also recommend purchasing from Amazon. As a student I received Amazon Prime for free and was able to get my textbook shipping for free. In addition, the price for this textbook was significantly less than anywhere else I researched. Amazon also had a nice deal where they gave $5 in free MP3 purchases for every textbook purchased, which is a nice little perk.
Basically, this book contains many of the classic PA articles in one handy format. The authors give a brief description and summary of each time period, then the articles follow. Necessary to see where PA has come from and gives hints of where it is going.
