Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry (Lieberman, Marks's Basic Medical Biochemistry), 4th Edition

Marks’ Basic Medical Biochemistry takes a patient-oriented approach that links biochemistry  to physiology and pathophysiology, allowing students to apply fundamental concepts to the practice of medicine—from diagnosing patients to recommending effective treatments. Intuitively organized chapters center on hypothetical patient vignettes and helpful icons allow for smooth navigation, making complex concepts easier to grasp!

Access additional resources online with purchase of text! Instructors receive access to a dedicated Image Bank as well as all student features, which include fully searchable eBook; animations depicting 9 key biochemical concepts; interactive question bank with more than 450 USMLE questions and complete rationales; full patient summaries for each patient discussed in the text; comprehensive list of disorders covered in the text, with relevant web links; and suggested readings for further exploration.

This is the first time I have taken any Biochem course, and the book has been great. It has a “waiting room” at the beginning of every chapter with people presenting with different symptoms related to the chapter, then the chapter itself is quite dense, but it gives you little clinical tid-bits along the way. The end of each chapter explains the outcome and/or treatment for each patient. It really helps the information stick. I am using this for Biochem as a prereq for PA school, and recommend it for anyone applying to a graduate health science program. After using this book, I really understand the biochemistry of the body, and the balance of body fluid chemistry is something I am very comfortable with. If you are someone who struggled with Organic Chemistry but loved physiology, this book is for you.
Overall this is a good book. There were some typos with regards to chemical structure names (I believe it stated the name as propanone, but it was supposed to indicate propanol for a review question). Other than that it was a good textbook to review the different organ system processes.
I’m using this textbook for veterinary school and it is extremely helpful. It’s been 4 years since I took biochemistry and my vet school biochem class is focused more on biochemistry as it relates to diseases and this book does an excellent job of covering the basics of biochemistry in the context of medicine. I like the case studies in each chapter that help reinforce the concepts, and often the diseases in the book are diseases that I have to understand for my exams, so it’s been a great investment. I like the format of this textbook and the graphics are easy to understand.
The text is very comprehensive and everything is explained well enough for a medical student to understand. The summaries at the end help wrap up everything I’ve learned, and there are clinical correlations throughout the chapter to connect biochemistry to applicable medicine.
